Business Analyst resume keywords that get you noticed

Business analyst is one of the most keyword-sensitive roles for ATS screening, because so much of the job is described in specific, searchable terms. If your resume doesn't use them, you can be a strong BA and still get filtered out. Here's what to include — truthfully.

Core BA techniques

These are the terms almost every BA posting screens for: requirements gathering, requirements elicitation, business requirements, functional requirements, gap analysis, stakeholder analysis, process mapping, process improvement, user stories, use cases, acceptance criteria. Name the ones you've genuinely done, in your bullets and a skills line.

Documentation and artifacts

BAs are expected to produce specific documents: BRD (business requirements document), FRD (functional requirements document), user stories, use cases, process flows, wireframes, data mapping, traceability matrix. Referencing the right artifacts signals you've done the actual work.

Tools and technical skills

Searchable and concrete: SQL, Excel, JIRA, Confluence, Visio, Lucidchart, Tableau, Power BI, SharePoint, Balsamiq. SQL especially is a frequent screen for BA roles — if you have it, make sure it's on the page. List only what you've used.

Methodologies

Like PMs, BAs get screened for delivery approach: Agile, Scrum, Waterfall, SDLC, UAT (user acceptance testing). UAT in particular is a common BA keyword — if you've supported testing, include it.

Certifications

Relevant credentials to list if you hold them: CBAP, CCBA, ECBA, PMI-PBA, Agile Analysis Certification. As with any role, you only need the ones you've actually earned — one relevant certification satisfies most screens.

How to use them honestly

Mirror the specific posting. A BA role at a bank emphasizing SQL and data mapping needs different terms surfaced than one focused on process improvement and stakeholder workshops. Read the description, match your real experience to its language, and make those exact terms appear. Skip anything you can't back up in an interview.

The honest check

Before applying, confirm your resume reflects the keywords that specific BA posting screens for — and that you genuinely match the core requirements. Keywords get you past the filter; they can't manufacture experience you don't have. Spend your energy on the roles you're actually a fit for.
